Guitars Exchange

Designed by David Weitzman, the Little Sister from B&G Guitars is fighting for her own place in the handcrafted guitar market. We discovered this guitar thanks to a video -very well done, indeed- that landed on our social networks by chance. Eliran Barashi and Kiki Goldstein (B&G) are passionate about vintage guitars and Little Sister is the spitting image of their philosophy: light body (semi-hollow, with original reverse f-holes), parlor shaped... acoustic soul, electric spirit. Cool handmade pickups (humbucker or P90, made in their workshop in Tel-Aviv) and wood from Brazil, Honduras, Madagascar or Amazon do the rest: one guitar in two versions (dreadnought or single cutaway) that sounds amazing just plugged directly into the amp: no effects needed to appreciate the quality... We will be closely watching Little Sister evolution: will the baby grow fast and healthy?

1. GUITARS EXCHANGE: How did you end up becoming, or start out as, a luthier?
B&G (Kiki Goldstein): I started playing the guitar when I was young, and I really liked all the technical stuff…then later on I became more and more interested in all the making process and getting control on sound of the instrument and the rest is history.  

2. GUITARS EXCHANGE: What inspires you to design and manufacture a new guitar?
B&G (Kiki Goldstein): I love vintage gear, it’s always been my inspiration, especially guitars from the 30’s up to the 60’s. So every time I design a new guitar I keep those times in mind.  

3. GUITARS EXCHANGE: Do you look for a given sound for any particular reason?
B&G (Kiki Goldstein): It’s a bit hard to explain that with words, but the sound that I'm going for is the closest to the quality and magic that the vintage instruments have.  

4. GUITARS EXCHANGE: Select one and talk about: soul, jazz, blues, rock, pop…or other.
B&G (Kiki Goldstein): Blues, you can make amazing things from a few simple instruments and a hoarse singer! And of course it’s the origin of all the greatest players.  

5. GUITARS EXCHANGE: Are you a jobbing artist or a solitary artisan?
B&G (Kiki Goldstein): I would say that I'm just a regular jobbing artist. I just love build guitars.  

6. GUITARS EXCHANGE: What was the last record or CD you bought? And listened to?
B&G (Kiki Goldstein): Avi Goldfinger - What do you even know about Jesus? Amazing guitar work!

7. GUITARS EXCHANGE: Electric or acoustic?  
B&G (Kiki Goldstein): Depends on the time…but right now - acoustic.

8. GUITARS EXCHANGE: What is the secret behind your choice of wood?
B&G (Kiki Goldstein): I can’t explain exactly when it comes to wood choices, but a tip that I can give you would be that secret is knowing how to match between different types of wood, which is the one of the most critical parts.

9. GUITARS EXCHANGE: Why should we consider luthier-crafted guitars as a viable option to guitars made by the large manufacturers?
B&G (Kiki Goldstein): Large manufacturers can’t give the same amount of attention to the guitar as a luthier can. Also, large manufacturers can’t supply huge amount of high quality wood as a boutique luthier can.  

10. GUITARS EXCHANGE: Who plays your guitars? Who would you like to have play your guitars?
B&G (Kiki Goldstein): I want people that will simply love and appreciate the guitar and connect with it and these are the people who play it right now!
